If you’re on a budget but still have a hankering for all things bon voyage there’s no need to shelv your plans because of cash concerns. We’ve got three handy-dandy tips that will ensure a happ wallet, whether your destination is Paris, Reno or Outer Space.
1. Stay with a Friend or a Do an Apartment Swap. The biggest expense while traveling is definitelywhere you’ll lay your head. Skip the fancy hotels and even shy away from budget-friendly hostels. If you’re a seasoned globetrotter you may have friends littering the map, so call them up and ask to crash on their couch or in their spare room. All you have to offer in exchange is dinner or a nice bottle of vino. If you’re traveling to the far reaches of Shanghai and don’t have a friend in the area, look into an apartment swap. This allows you to exchange your flat for another in a city of yourchoice. Peruse the web for a well-respected site that allows you to vet swappers and check out pictures of their flat.
2. Eat Where the Locals Eat. Outside of your accommodation, chowing down can eat up a lot of your traveling expenses. The easiest way to save money on food involves patronizing local grocery stores and markets. Eat a few meals that you cook yourself so when you want to splurge on a 4-course meal, you’ll have nothing to worry about!
3. Hunt Down the Freebies. Almost every city has something for nothing. Scour the web for free walking tours or city guides. Many cities in Europe have free museum days so you can get a taste of some more refined culture. If the weather is good, why not take a stroll through a local park or arboretum? You’ll happily smell the roses when you think of all the money you’ve saved!
